The first step is quite simple but can save you a lot of hassle, and that is placing a doormat in front of your house to avoid staining from shoes. It is also recommended to remove footwear inside the home and opt for some slippers to avoid getting dirt on the rug, but this is optional.
Vacuuming a rug is also a good option, but must be done with care and precision. Unlike carpets, rugs are more prone to damage, so this cleaning process must be carried out more gently. It is also best to opt for a light vacuum rather than heavy duty ones, or at least turn the suction to “carpet mode” to avoid damage from strong suction. Gently vacuum the rug using side-to-side movements but avoid pressing too hard since this can damage and wear out the design.
If your rug has fringes or tassels, avoid vacuuming those areas since the strong suction of the machine can tear those off. It is also recommended to vacuum the back of the rug, since dirt particles can embed themselves into the material from below, thinning out the rug over time.It is not recommended to do full cleaning procedures at home, but spot cleaning can be a good solution for removing minor stains. Simply mix a teaspoon of dish-washing liquid with a teaspoon of vinegar and some warm water, and apply this mixture to the stained area. Finally, gently blot the area with a towel and leave it to dry. However, it is always best to seek professional assistance rather than attempt stain removal at home, since all rugs are different and can react differently to home-made stain removers.
