A rug is a great way to give a freshness to your house and
just a simple way to update your floors. Whether you are a wall-to-wall carpet
or an area rug lover, it’s important to choose a rug matching the atmosphere
and comfort of your living room. However, with so many options out there, you
can’t pick the one that is perfect for your living room. There are a few things
to consider before buying a rug and either complementing or ruining your room.
Let’s puzzle them out together and make it easier for you to
make up your choice.
Rug Size
People usually are not able to choose the right size of rug for their living room. Most commonly they choose a carpet that is small. In stores, you can find only standard sizes that are 6 x 9 feet, 8 x 10 feet, and 9 x 12 feet but sometimes these sizes do not suit your room. Of course, you have an option to order a custom-made rug, yet it might be a little bit more expansive. It is better to invest more than to have a floating rug look in your living room. Firstly, measure the area that you want to place a rug on. You can do that by covering it with papers or newspapers. This will give you a clear image of your future rug size. Remember, to keep 4 to 8 inches from all sides of the rug bare. Here is a video that will guide you (via Overstock).
Rug Colour / Shape / Pattern
Other important aspects when choosing a perfect area rug for your living room are colour and pattern. A rug can give identity to your room, choose a patterned rug to add colour to your room, if the room is in pastel or at least neutral colours. If your room is already colourful, you’d better go with a solid one-colour rug to avoid cluttered space. Remember that solid rug can’t conceal stains and dirt, yet patterned carpet can.
Also, don’t bound yourself to standard rug shapes. You are
free to choose an oval-shaped, circular, etc. to suit your space better.
Rug Textile / Fibre
One of the biggest mistakes people make while choosing a rug
is choosing the wrong material. Before purchase think about how you want the
rug to feel. Think about wool rugs, they can add warmth and softness to your
floor, meanwhile, materials like jute, sisal that are less expensive might feel
a little rough. Silk rugs are usually of the best material but they are
expensive and difficult to clean. Consider all these things before making the
final decision.
Budget
Certainly, the budget is on the list. Don’t save up on a
good rug, remember that high-quality rugs such as wool and silk carpets will
serve longer, and they are more durable than rugs of cheap materials. In the
words of Ron Testa, Rugs make a hard surface look better and soften it up. A
good rug completes the sections of a room. Bear this in mind. Generally, look
at other pieces of furniture and guide yourself on how much to spend on the rug.
You can set a price in advance before buying a rug, maybe consider going up or
down by 10% for your own flexibility.
